Under Connecticut General Statutes §20-298, a licensed architect is generally not required for many single-family residential projects under 5,000 square feet. However, that does not mean a homeowner can skip the planning stage.
Construction drawings still need to be detailed enough to satisfy local building officials, zoning requirements, and the Connecticut State Building Code. If plans are incomplete or unclear, permit approval can be delayed regardless of whether an architect was involved. In other words, the law may not require an architect, but it does require accurate plans.
